Inspiring success story of a Woman
Nirmala Sitharaman was born in Tiruchirapalli, Madurai in Tamil Nadu on August 18, 1959, to Savitri and Narayanan Sitharaman.
Her father hailed from Musiri, Tiruchirappalli while her mother’s roots in Thiruvenkadu.
Her father was an employee of Railways while her mother was a homemaker. She spent her childhood in various parts of Tamil Nadu as her father’s job was transferable.
Her studies came from Madras and Tiruchirappalli, in the time of school and she obtained a BA in economics at the Seethalakshmi Ramaswamy College in Tiruchirapalli and master’s from JNU, Delhi.
She married Parakala Prabhakar in 1986 and the couple moved to London. Nirmala Sitharaman succeeded in the corporate world there but finally came back to India in 1991. The couple has a daughter.
Political Progress
Sitharaman came in touch with senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj while serving as a member of the National Commission for Women [NCW] from 2003 to 2005.
Impressed with her dignified personality and outspoken views, Swaraj recommended Sitharaman to the party. Thus she joined the BJP in 2006 and has served as a spokesperson for the party.
She defended the BJP in every situation and praised party leaders including Narendra Modi on the national media. And became a popular face not only in Delhi but also in the party headquarters in Gujarat.
She was also appointed as the member of Rajya Sabha from Andhra Pradesh. The seat was left vacant after the death of Nedurumalli Janardhan Reddy.
The Telugu Desam Party (TDP), the major alliance partner of the BJP, offered the seat to Sitharaman. She is currently the Rajya Sabha MP representing Karnataka.
She played a major role during the Lok Sabha elections of 2014. She projected Narendra Modi as a future prime minister of India. It was believed that her hard work and dedication would surely get her a place in Modi’s cabinet.
Sitharaman has served as the Minister of Defense of India from 3 September 2017 to 30 May 2019 and now she is Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs of India. Also, her name has entered as India’s second female defense minister.
She has also served as a member of the National Commission for Women. She was one of the founding directors of Pranava in Hyderabad in 2017.
Before Politic
She worked as a salesgirl at a home decor store in London’s Regent Street. She has also served as an assistant to the economist in the agricultural engineers association and as a Senior Manager (R&D) for Price Water house & briefly at the BBC World Service in the UK.
