There is a town in Bikaner district named as ‘Deshnok’, where is one of the unique temple of rats, also known as the Karni Mata temple.

The temple of spiritual significance is the tourist attraction in Bikaner. The historical facts and impressive architecture of this temple make it so special and unique.

Maharaja Ganga Singh of Bikaner built this temple about 100 years ago. The building structure of this temple is made of marble stone and the entrance door decorated with silver. 

Thousands of people visit here to get the blessings of the goddess. The interesting thing is that this temple is home to around 25,000 rats also known as Kabas or little children.

These rats are protected here and also worshipped because these are treated as sacred. When you enter the temple courtyard then you will find a bunch of rats lazing everywhere in the temple.

These rats don’t bite any person or the barefooted person who enters the temple, you will see these rats running around everywhere playing with all visitors. 

The rat is called Kaba there, and if any Kaba runs over your feet, it considered auspicious. These ate sweets or prasad that offered to them by visitors and milk is also served in a huge size metal bowl which kept on the ground.

When the priest performs puja rituals at that time also these rats enjoy sweets and milk at the main shrine of the temple. These are different from the rat ones found in our houses. Let’s know-how…

The common rats can spread diseases such as plague and often bite also, but rats found at Karni Mata Mandir/Temple aren’t harmful. There is no single case recorded of contracting the disease from the temple rats, this thing makes Karni Mata Temple special or mysterious.

There is another strange thing that most of the rats are of a typical size or each looks like the same in this temple. And also, no one has ever seen a newborn Kaba/rat there. Till now, nobody exactly knows about these rats’ mysterious life cycle.

Chuhe Wala Mandir Bikaner Rajasthan

Goddess Karni Mata is the main deity in this temple who is the incarnation of Goddess Durga Maa. It believed to be that Kabas/rats are manifestations of the Karni Mata’s sons.

The main shrine of this place has a 75 Cms tall idol of Karni Mata which holding a trident (Trishul) in her hand. Karni Mata is always adorned with a beautiful crown and a flower garland.

Goddess performed many miracles during the 14th century. Durga Maa in the form of Karni Mata lived at the place where this mysterious ‘Rat Temple of India’ stands at Deshnoke (30 km away from Bikaner City) in Rajasthan, India.
